Bridal Tips : Care and Alterations

Scheduling Alterations

Schedule your fittings early and begin the alterations process at least 3 months prior to your wear date.

You should expect at least two fittings and a separate pick-up appointment.

Your first appointment for a bridal gown fitting will last from 45 minutes to an hour.

Be sure to schedule your final fitting a few weeks before the big day in case there are any last minute adjustments that need to be made to your gown.

Bustling

If your dress has a train that is to be bustled, be sure you and your assistant or maid of honor know how to bustle the dress. If you’re unsure, ask a Schaffer’s consultant and they will be glad to show you how.

Pressing your gown

Your gown will often get a couple of wrinkles during transportation. You can press any wrinkles out with a warm, dry iron.

Before you press, you’ll want to make sure that ALL water is out of the iron in order to avoid water spots, and to test the iron for the correct temperature.

To test the temperature, press the iron on the ironing board and lift it up. You should be able to immediately touch the ironing board without it being too hot to touch. If you can’t do this, then the iron needs to cool until touching the board is possible.

You will also need a pressing cloth or a hand towel. The reason this is so important is because there is often residue on the bottom of the iron that can stain your gown. The pressing cloth will also help protect your gown from an iron that is too hot.

After your dress has been pressed or steamed you will need to hang it in a high cool and dry place prior to wearing.

Transporting your gown

When transporting your dress, make sure to keep it stored in its bag to prevent it from getting dirty.

Caring for your veil and slip

The instructions for caring for your veil and slip are also important. The veil is safest in the plastic bag it was in when you picked it up from being pressed.

The slip should be taken out of the bag it came in and allowed to hang freely.
